An artificial heart is typically used to bridge the time to heart transplantation, or to permanently replace the heart in case heart transplantation is impossible. It is intended to help patients who are in the advanced stages of heart failure.
But why isn’t it good as a permanent solution?
These devices are not good for long term as the blood cells they pump around are subjected to too much damage eventually that causes the cells to rupture faster than they can be replaced.
The problem is also the energy source that powers it continuously 24/7. Batteries are too big and heavy while other power sources are impossible to install in a body, so the patient usually has to remain sedentary in order to have those pumps installed even temporarily. The second big disadvantage is that the complication rate is high. The most common complications from artificial hearts are infections, blood clots (thrombus) and device Failure. The mysteries of an artificial heart is currently beyond the technology we possess.
