This proverb is trying to tell people that by respecting themselves, whether that means in a physical or moral way, others will notice that self care. People like to be surrounded by individuals who are put together and are concerned by their appearance and level of knowledge. Basically, respecting your life and how you live it will have an impact on others, making you seem more respectable to them as well.
